About Mel

I’m not an influencer. I’m not wealthy. I’m not photogenic. I have a pretty regular day job, a regular family, a regular house… sort of.

I am a writer, reader, artist, musician, athlete, actor, herbalist and more. I’m a mother, a partner, and a hard worker. I live with my family at Ecovillage in Ithaca, NY.

During the last ten years, my world has been largely focused on work — raising my kids and paying bills. I’ve always been interested in sustainability and doing what I can to mitigate my carbon footprint. I moved to Ecovillage nearly ten years ago toward that goal.

In 2012 I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. In 2013 I began my journey with borreliosis and lingering Lyme. Then in 2018, I suffered an injury during my yoga teacher training that gradually caused debilitating pain and disability. I’ve had two corrective surgeries on my hip to fix it. In 2023 I had two nerves severed in my hip to stop the pain. In April of 2024, I’ll have a total hip replacement. As I write this, I’m on the other side of a hip replacement and I couldn’t be happier with the results. It’s still a journey though, and one I’ll likely continue to write about for some time.

For joy, I write poetry, stories, and make music. My primary instrument is the lowly autoharp. I also play musical saw and ukulele. I’m a beginning violinist.

I knit, crochet and spin yarn on my beautiful Louet S10.

I’m an archer… formerly competitive (on hiatus due to disability), and USA Archery Level 4 NTS Coach. I coach and refine my practice at Ithaca Archery. I formerly taught archery and advanced archery at Cornell University.

I’m a cook, a gardener, a dog mom… all those things that come with running a house.

This blog is my attempt to reconnect with my writing, sort through my small steps toward sustainability, and share my adventures with my friends and family. Welcome!
